SELF CARE SUNDAY YOUTH-LED RIDE

RICH CITY Rides “Self-Care Sundays” is a weekly bicycle program that offers a family friendly and community-oriented opportunity to ride together. The RCR team always keeps these rides uplifting and fun, and this past week was another bright moment when 7-year-old Sofia became the youngest ride leader of the new youth program to navigate the route!

About 30 participants joined in for Sofi’s initiatory ride, including her proud dad, Dani. Sofia has joined Dani on rides since toddlerhood, getting the hang of two-wheels by age four. Sofi began participating in RCR events at age five, where she found mentorship and support, and developed her confidence and skills on a bike. Outgoing and convivial, Sofia is clearly loved by the community and in turn felt ready to lead the pack.

Starting at Unity Park, where the Sunday Self Care Rides always kick-off with gathering, music, and stretching, participants then traveled along the Greenway and toward the Point Richmond tunnel. When Sofia realized that a very young rider was struggling to keep pace with the group, she invited her to ride in front with her – demonstrating the values she’s learned through her engagement with RCR.

A brief intermission to wait for a train didn’t dampen the vibe – music played from the boom box and an engineer waved from one of the passing train cars. The group made their way to Keller beach to enjoy the weather and the waves, then continued (minus a few who’d gone for a swim), to Brickyard Cove before returning to Unity Park. Sunshine, cool breezes, excellent people, and bicycles – what better way to spend a Sunday in Richmond.

Self-Care is a radical concept – creating space to attend to our community’s physical, mental and emotional health is so important, and rarely centered in discussions around how we prioritize our resources in Richmond. Allowing young people to shine in these spaces is an incredible way to teach them the value of self-care and respect for the rituals that sustain us and keep us healthy. Thanks to Sofia and RICH CITY Rides for another great day out.
